Discover Peru

We head high into the Andes to the mountain towns of Huaraz and Caraz which are sandwiched between the Cordillera Blanca and Negra. Surrounded by glaciated peaks ranging from 14,000 to 21,000 ft in height, the beauty and remoteness of this area is why it’s our longest trip on offer with Ride Local.

Each day we will get shuttled up to 13,000 to 15,000ft and descend raw rocky trails averaging 4,500ft of vertical per lap. Lodging in the culturally rich town of Huaraz for the first portion, we can explore the local breweries and eat lomo saltado pizza. From Huaraz we will ride off the Cordillera Negro which serves up fast Incan singletrack with amazing views of the Cordillera Blanca.

For the second half of the trip we head to our bungalows in the small town of Caraz. This gives us a good launch point for our ventures into the high peaks of the Cordillera Blanca, where we’ll ride some of the rockiest and steepest trails of the trip. Engulfed by the massive peaks of the White Range high alpine trails await with up to 7,000 vertical ft of descending, mostly littered with rocks and steep switchbacks. The journey back to Lima we will squeeze one more ride off the mountain pass out of Huaraz, before our evening arrival in Lima and departures for the next day.

Trip itinerary

Day One:

Arriving in Lima we’ll come pick you up and take you to the hotel. Get the bikes built and depending on your time of arrival, go on a shake down ride to the Morro Solar trails that descend right to the beach. That evening eat dinner in one of Lima’s delicious restaurants and talk about the journey ahead.

Day Two:

For the first full day of riding we’ll head to Pachacamac Bike Park in Lima and get 3-4 shuttles in. This is the day to get the bikes dialed to make sure everyone is prepared for the trip into the mountains.

Day Three:

Head out early and make the 6-hour drive to Huaraz. No riding today but we’ll have a nice afternoon in Huaraz getting unpacked and walking around the city.

Day Four:

First day riding in Huaraz we head up to the Cordillera Negra’s to shuttle 3 trails, a good day to get acclimatized to the terrain and the high altitude. A picnic lunch will provide awesome views of the Cordillera Blanca.

Day Five:

Two rides on the docket for today and our first day in the Cordillera Blanca. First trail will start at a glacial lake at 14,600ft and offer a good mix of technical rocky sections with some speed thrown in for good measure. The second ride has a good mix of everything with some urban sections to keep you on your toes.

Day Six:

Back to the Cordillera Negra’s for 4 more shuttle rides up to 14,000ft. High speed grassy trails followed by a dose of rocky urban sections are on today’s docket.

Day Seven:

Sleep in and pack up, we head north to the town of Caraz and our bungalows. Today is a rest day with the option to get a ride in from the hotel. BBQ in the afternoon to fuel up for the second half of the trip.

Day Eight:

Rocks, rocks and more rocks. Day eight we ride some of Ride Local’s favorite trails and feed you a delicious serving of rocks.

Day Nine:

Today is a big one with a shuttle up to 15,600ft followed by a 7,000ft descent to the valley floor. You’ll experience rocky alpine riding with glacial lakes, and cactus down low. A mid-way stop at a brewery to quench our thirst is just the cherry on top.

Day Ten:

A sprinkling of old and new. The rides stay closer to Caraz and give us the option to repeat any of the trails from day eight, or go for new ones that end at the bungalows.

Day Eleven:

Make our way back to Lima but not without one more good ride. We’ll head out early to ride off the mountain pass that brought us to Huaraz and descend towards the ocean.

Day Twelve:

With our late night arrival in Lima, we will help you get the bikes and gear packed so you're ready for your departure. Say our good byes and drop you off at the airport.

Trip details

What to Expect:

The mountains of the Cordillera Blanca and Negra is a very unexplored area by mountain bikes. Ride Local is privileged to offer the first guided bike trips into these incredible mountains. Due to the remoteness of this area, along with the high altitude and technical nature of the trails, we recommend that only advanced riders whom are used to high altitude technical riding to join us.

Expect 8-9 days of riding days with 1-4 shuttle rides a day to altitudes up to 15,000ft. Followed by long technical descents with some climbing in between. The trails are raw and rocky with lots of fall line riding and steep hair pin switchbacks. Plan to be out riding 5-7 hours a day.
