Discover Chile
Heading directly into the mountains upon pick up, we head to Farellones and our base camp for the next four days. Connected to La Parva, El Colorado and Valle Nevado ski areas we’ll have easy access to big mountain trails with the famed “anti-grip” dirt. Starting most rides at 11,000ft the trails dump lots of vertical quickly over steep rocky terrain. Surrounded by the massive Coastal Andes mountains we’ll ride some of the biggest descents overlooking Santiago. For the Farellones portion of the trip, majority of the meals will be at the cabins and included in the trip price. Since there are limited restaurant options in the mountains.
After Farellones we start the journey west to the coast for the second half of the trip. Heading first to Cajon Del Maipo for a unique trail ride into the canyon to the base of a glacier. The next day make the final push to the coastal town of Matanzas. Famous for its beaches and awesome waves, it also has a growing network of trails. Overlooking the ocean prepare for fast single track that descends right to the beach. Exploring this area for two days we can ride all we want. Afterwards, chill at the beach for waves, wine with fresh seafood and sunsets.
The last two days we’ll venture back to the capital city of Santiago. Staying in Providencia Santiago, there is easy access to fun trails in nearby metro park. Check out the big city that evening and enjoy the last night of our Chilean experience.
Day One:
Welcome to Chile! Pick you up at the Santiago airport then head straight to the mountains. Lodging in awesome A-frame cabins in the town of Farellones, it will be our base camp for the next 4 days. Build the bikes and have a welcome dinner at the local pizzeria to talk about the upcoming trip.
Day Two:
First day out we’ll head right up the street to Farellones bike park to get some fun laps in. A good first day to get acclimated to the altitude, and terrain in the Chilean Andes. More and more trails are being built up here in Lo Barnechea, today we’ll explore the surrounding trails in Farellones via chairlift.
Day Three:
Prepare for some big shuttle laps. First trail is Refugio Aleman that descends 4,000ft to the next valley. One of our favorite trails it passes an old German refuge and ends in loose dusty switchbacks. The second shuttle takes us to the top of the famous Parvazo trail. Famed for its relentless rock gardens and huge vertical loss, we’ll descend 5,000ft in 7 miles. Depending on how the arms are feeling, we can lap these trails late into the afternoon.
Day Four:
More shuttles on the docket and the first trail is one we nick named, “The Whole Empanada.” Another 5,000ft descent down loose dusty switchbacks to the river below. Practice your drifting skills on the Chilean anti-grip, then wash the dust off in the river. After we eat some Empanadas! Head back to Farellones to shuttle their local trails and have a BBQ for our last evening in base camp.
Day Five:
Wake up early for our drive to Cajon Del Maipo for a big trail ride to El Morado Glacier. Deep into Valle de la Arena we’ll have a 2-3 hour pedal and push to the beautiful lagoon at the glacier’s base. The descent back down will be a mixture of rocky single track with some freeride sections thrown in for good measure. That night lodge at the base of Cajon Del Maipo.
Day Six:
Today is a rest day while we make the 3-4 hour drive to the coastal town of Matanzas. Depending on our arrival we have the option to get a ride in or just hang at the beach and enjoy the waves.
Day Seven:
The trails around Matanzas are an absolute blast. Expect fast and well built tracks with great views of the ocean. They aren’t long but we can get multiple laps in and still have time to catch some waves or go for a wine tour after.
Day Eight:
The second day in Matanzas we’ll check out the other trail network for more fun filled shuttle laps. Stacking up the vertical the trails aren’t super technical, but they are fast with lots of fun optional features. That evening savor the sunset and our last night on the coast.
Day Nine:
Eat breakfast, load up and drive back to Santiago. Staying in the capital city for the last night of the trip, our hotel has great access to trails and restaurants. We can ride San Sebastian, a local metro park with lots of downhill trails to pedal or shuttle. For the last evening of the trip eat dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in Providencia.
Day Ten:
Pack the bikes and gear for everyone’s departure. Say our goodbyes and drop you off at the airport for your journey home.
What to Expect:
The Central Andes mountains outside of Santiago gain huge vertical quickly. They are dry and rocky with minimal foliage, the anti-grip here is no joke! Based in Farellones, we’ll overlook Santiago while being surrounded by massive peaks such as Cerro El Plomo and La Paloma. The journey to the coast will display the variety of trails and terrain Chile has to offer. Ride Local is beyond excited to show more people the Chilean lifestyle.
Expect 8 days of riding with 3-6 rides a day, most rides will be shuttle assisted to elevations over 11,000ft. The dry rocky trails up in the Andes are fast, and steep with lots of loose rocks. Down on the coast the trails stay fast and flowy versus steep and technical. It is about peak summer here in Chile, prepare for warm and dry temperatures. Plan to be out riding 4-6 hours a day.
