Discover Mexico

Our trip begins in the mountain town of Mascota where we’ll ride for our first 3 days. With the amount of trails surrounding this area we’ll average 3-4 rides a day. Fast loamy single track to rutted rocky chutes to steep jungle switchbacks, the trails here have plenty of Mexican surprises.

From Mascota we’ll head to the top of the Sierra Madre mountains and the small mountain town of San Sebastian del Oeste to ride off its iconic peak, Cerro de la Bufa. This marks the mid-way point of our trip and the beginning of our descent to the ocean.

The last two days of riding will be right off the coast in Banderas Bay. Each ride will end at the beach where delicious fresh seafood and cold refreshments await. Starting in the heart of the Sierra Madres to the warm beaches of Puerto Vallarta, our agave trail odyssey is a new way to see Mexico.

Trip Itinerary

Day One:

Upon airport pick up in Puerto Vallarta we’ll head directly into the mountains to the town of Mascota.  After unpacking and getting the bikes assembled, we can take a quick pedal around town to get acquainted with our home for the next 4 days.  Group dinner that evening at one of the delicious local restaurants to talk about the journey to come.

Day Two:

Expect 3-4 shuttles for our first day of riding in Mascota. A mix of fast rocky trails and loamy switchbacks will be a great warm up for the week and a good way to dial the bikes in. Each ride ends in a small mountain town where we can grab snacks and lunch.

Day Three:

Another shuttle packed day in Mascota with 3-4 trails on deck. The trails will get longer and more technical today but are some of our favorites in Mascota. Expect big views of the Sierra Madre mountains accompanied by longs descents weaving through large agave plants.

Day Four:

We saved the most technical trails for our last day in Mascota. Steep rock gardens and high speed off-camber sections can only mean one thing, Intrepida trail. This trail is famous in the area for its rock gardens. We can choose to repeat this trail, or any of the trails from previous days for our last day in Mascota.

Day Five:

The next portion of our agave trail odyssey brings us to the top of Cerro de la Bufa. Starting with ocean views from the top we’ll descend 4,000ft to the old colonial mining town, Sebastian del Oeste. Post-ride lunch and refreshments in Sebastian del Oeste before our drive to our lodgings in Sayulita for the next two nights.

Day Six:

The new trails being built in Puerto Vallarta have some of the best views of the trip.  Expect 2-3 rides down fast sandy single track overlooking Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay.  Descending down to the beach we’ll kick off our shoes to enjoy some post-ride refreshments and food.

Day Seven:

For our last day riding in Mexico we’ll enjoy a nice cross-country lap from Sayulita to San Poncha. Ride bikes, swim in the ocean, and eat delicious food? Sure, why not?

Day Eight:

Enjoy the morning and take advantage of our beachside amenities. Pack up the bikes and gear for the transfer to Puerto Vallarta airport. Say our good byes and drop you off for your trip home.

What to Expect:

The Sierra Madre’s are steep rocky coastal mountains that range from 8,000 to 13,000ft in height, and offer a great variety of trails for most levels of riders. This said majority of the trip we will be in remote areas so resources are limited. Ride Local is privileged to have trips to Mexico, and to show more people the awesome riding this country has.

Expect 6-7 days of riding with 1-4 rides a day, most rides will be shuttle assisted to elevations up to 9,000ft. There will be some climbing on most trails and on connections to other trails. Expect very fast and loose trails with plenty of steep rocky sections. Plan to be out riding 4-6 hours a day.
